Climate Change Adaptation
The changing climate affects us all and has a particularly strong impact along our coastline with increasing sea levels and storm surge risks. It is essential that we adapt to this risk and we increase our resiliency in the face of change. This section only addresses the question of adaptation, while the Energy section addresses concerns and actions around reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
The following issues were identified by participants of the Green Strategy development in 2017 and 2018:
- The loss of coastal areas including wetlands and beaches, and the lack of understanding about the role of those systems, and of the impacts of erosion control measures;
- Concerns about the implementation of the sea level rise zone, enforcement, and impacts on neighbouring properties from run-off caused by requirements to build above the flood level;
- The continued development in risk areas, and the continued deterioration of wetlands and other areas that have the capacity to reduce flooding downstream.
Numerous actions were presented by community members that can help address these concerns. Look on the left-hand side of the screen under “Actions”. If you are looking for things that you can do, look under “What you can do”. To find out more about who is already working on the issues, look under “Digging Deeper”.
