Agriculture & Local Food

Food is linked to every other theme on this website and is an essential part of our lives. “We are what we eat”, and we can change the world with our eating habits. Buying locally produced food reduces the emissions caused by transporting food long distances. Producing food organically reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilizers that enter our waters and food chains.

The following issues were identified by participants of the Green Strategy development in 2017 and 2018:

• There are too few agricultural producers in the area and concern was raised over losing even small amounts of agricultural lands to either developments or to topsoil removal.
• Local food is not promoted in the region, easily available in stores or used for public events.

Numerous actions were presented by community members that can help address these concerns. Look on the left-hand side of the screen under “Actions”.
